Dra. Ashton-Prolla received her degree in Medicine (1992) and PhD in Biological Sciences (Biochemistry) from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, 1999), in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She was a resident in Medical Genetics at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA 1993-1995) in Brazil, Fellow in Clinical Genetics (1995-1997) and in clinical molecular genetics (1997-1999) in the Department of Genetics, Mount Sinai School of Medicine New York. After receiving her PhD, she was a research fellow in the Service of Medical Genetics, Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre in the field of cancer genetics.
Currently, she is Chief Research Officer at HCPA, associate professor in genetics at UFRGS and professor of the post-graduate courses of Medicine and Genetics and Molecular Biology from UFRGS, visiting professor City of Hope Medical Center, faculty at the Escola Latino Americana de Genética Humana (ELAG) and member of the consulting committee of the Latin American section of the American Association for Cancer Research.
She works predominantly in the field of cancer genetics, with emphasis in genetic counseling and molecular diagnosis. She is a member of the Brazilian Society of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
