Graduated in Medicine from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG, 1988). Specialized in Internal Medicine (1989-1991), and in Hematology/Hemotherapy (1991-1993) at UFMG, and Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) at the University of Paris VII. He is also a Master (1996) and Doctor (2001) in Biological and Medical Sciences - University of Paris VII.
Currently, he is a Professor in the school of medicine at Universidade de São Paulo - FMUSP, the Technical Director of the Hematology Service Hemotherapy and Cell Therapy of the Division of Internal Medicine I at Hospital das Clínicas the university of São Paulo, the President of Fundação Pró-Sangue Hemocentro de São Paulo, the Medical Coordinator - Hematological Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at Rede D'Or São Luiz (São Paulo), a Professor and Consultant of Hematology at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom and a Scientific Consultant of the Eurocord Registry, Hospital Saint Louis, Paris, France.
