Sidnei Epelman, trained in medicine, undertook his residency training in the pediatric department of the A. C. Camargo Hospital, a well known cancer hospital in São Paulo, after which he gained his specialist qualification in pediatric oncology. In 1985 a scholarship from the World Health Organization enabled him to spend training periods in three major institutions in the USA and he subsequently collaborated in a scientific study with the US National Cancer Institute (NCI), which he visited for a period of additional training in 1990-1.
