Raul Istúriz graduated from the Central University of Venezuela Medical School in 1974. After competing his medical internship and residency at St. Raphael’s Hospital he stayed in New Haven, Connecticut for an extended Infectious Diseases fellowship at Yale University. Since then he has returned to Venezuela and worked at Centro Medico de Caracas where he has served in the ethics committee, in the board of directors, in the Infectious Diseases Service and in the Department of Medicine which he chaired. He is currently a Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Director of the Adult Vaccination Service.

Dr. Istúriz has published original work on a variety of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases topics in national and international journals and is the author of important book chapters. Dr. Istúriz teaches at the Gorgas course of Clinical Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Istúriz was the founding president of the Infectious Disease Society of Venezuela and served as President of the Pan American Association for Infectious Diseases, he is Past-President of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Istúriz is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member the Infectious Diseases Society of America where he has worked for the International Affairs Committee and the Annual Meeting Program Committee.
