Graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Paraná in 1968, Dr. Miguel Carlos Riella continued his studies specializing in Internal Medicine (Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York 1970-1973) and later in Nephrology at the University of Washington (1973-1975) under the guidance of Dr. Belding H. Scribner, a pioneer in the field of Chronic Hemodialysis and still at the same University, directed the first home parenteral nutrition program. Over the years, Dr. Riella consolidated a Nephrology Service at, now, Hospital Universitário Evangélico Mackenzie, through which he started a program of Acute and Chronic Hemodialysis; a home peritoneal dialysis program (a pioneer in Brazil in 1980) and a Renal Transplant Program that has already over 1,000 transplants performed. The Nephrology Service was also a training center for more than 100 young doctors from Brazil and Latin America in Nephrology.
