He holds a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, specialization in Neurology from the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, specialization in Neurology from the University of Alabama, specialization in Neuropathology from Saint Louis University, Master's degree in Neuroanatomy from Saint Louis University and Ph. Ophthalmology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Founder and President of the Brazilian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (BCTRIMS); Founding Member and President of the Latin American Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (LACTRIMS). He is currently Full Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais and Coordinator of the Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology and the Center for Research and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CIEM UFMG). He has experience in Medicine, with an emphasis on Neuro-Ophthalmology, working mainly on the following subjects: optic neuritis, optic neuropathies, multiple sclerosis, optic neuromyelitis, loss of vision, ocular pain and headache.
