Ricardo M. Xavier completed the Faculty of Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), a medical residency in Rheumatology at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, and a doctorate in Immunology at Shimane University (Japan) in 1944. He is currently Professor Associate of the Faculty of Medicine / UFRGS, developing his activities at the Rheumatology Service of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre. He carries out research activities in the area of rheumatology, with an emphasis on the pathophysiology and clinic of autoimmune diseases. His lines of research include: genetics of inflammatory and autoimmune rheumatic diseases, pathophysiology of muscle atrophy associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, research into the effectiveness of potential new anti-rheumatic and immunomodulatory drugs at the levels of in vitro, experimental models and in clinical trials and epidemiology clinical manifestations of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
