Influenza in Latin America and the Caribbean

In response to a variety of needs represented by differing vaccination policies across Latin America, and in partnership with the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE), the AHF convenes an Influenza Workshop comprised of pediatric clinicians from the Latin American region who specialize in diagnosing and treating influenza.

The purpose of the Influenza Workshop was to:

  • promote awareness of the epidemiology, prevalence and burden of disease of influenza among children, increase medical knowledge regarding prevention strategies and available vaccines, support the expansion and strengthening of influenza vaccination policies, and advance key vaccination policy topics in the area of influenza, especially among children;
  • generate discussion and increase understanding of the burden of the disease and current vaccination policy for children in Latin America; and
  • advocate for more effective programs and policies targeted towards increasing the rate of influenza vaccination among children and including the quadrivalent intranasal vaccine in national immunization schedules across the Region, particularly for children 2 – 5 years of age.
